I am so blown away by this book. I really didn't expect that when I started. I bought it to take part in a read-a-long. This was my first read-a-long and I was pretty excited. Now, I'm so glad I signed up for it because the book is just wonderful.Will Grayson Will Grayson is about two boys named *duh* Will Grayson. Thus, it is told from the alternating POVs of the two boys. Thankfully, the different perspectives are easy to read as they extremely differ in style and writing. The first Will Grayson is a boy who has only one friend: Tiny Cooper, huge, extrovert and very very gay. Will has some simple rules in life that help him to shut up when trouble comes up and not care too much about other people. To me, he seemed to be a bit afraid of life itself. Will's friend Tiny has written a musical which he wants to cast for. The main characters in the musical are Tiny himself and a guy named Phil Wrayson (huh?). And if that wasn't enough nother in Will's life, there is Jane, Tiny's kind of interesting girl friend.The other will grayson (whose prose is written only in small letters) also doesn't have a lot of friends. At least, he doesn't consider them his friends, especially Maura who is extremely annoying yet sometimes good to have. will has to take antidepressants and has a very extreme black humor. (Just have a look at the quotes below.) will doesn't care much about his life or school. Who he cares about is a boy he met online and he chats with every night. will lives alone with his mother. I really like will's mother. I thought she did a wonderful job with her difficult son, ignoring all the insulting outbursts and being there for him when he needed her.Naturally, the two Wills meet at some time in the book. Nothing magical happens but their lives start to get entangled and in the end, they can learn from each other.I swear for the first chapters I was constantly giggling while reading. And I had to stop every other page to read passages out loud to my husband. I've never had a book before that was soooo funny. The Wills have a different kind of humor, you see the different authors in them, but both are hilarious.Still, this is not only a funny book. It moves from funny to thoughtful to heart-breaking and you don't even realize it until you cry in the end.Green and Levithan have written a book about love, about friendship, homosexuality, music, depression and family. About fear and anger. So simply about life. There is so much to think about that I definitely have to re-read it even though I don't do that very often. This was my first book from either author and I will read anything penned by them.This book is so full of awesomeness, laughing-out-loud humor and heart-breaking wisdom that I recommend it to everyone who can read at all. I will recommend it to all my students and colleagues because I'm sure there's a lot to learn from it and to discuss about.

Zwei völlig verschiedene Jungs mit ein und demselben Namen treffen sich durch Zufall mitten in Chicago. Sie beide haben einige Probleme mit sich und ihrem Umfeld. Besonders die Sexualität und Popularität sind Gebiete, auf welchen beide Schwierigkeiten haben.Was nach einem niedergeschlagenen und eher traurigen Werk klingt, entpuppt sich jedoch als unheimlich lustiges und kurzweiliges Lesevergnügen.Die Kapitel werden abwechselnd aus der Sicht von Will Grayson aus Chicago und Will Grayson aus Iowa erzählt.Ersterer lebt mit seinen Eltern ein recht durchschnittliches Leben, hat jedoch einen nicht allzu durchschnittlichen besten Freund - Tiny! Trotz dessen Namen ist Tiny riesengroß und sehr schwul, was er nicht versteckt. Ständig verliebt er sich Hals über Kopf und der eher stille Will leidet stark unter Tinys exzentrischer Art.Der andere Will lebt mit seiner Mutter in ärmlichen Verhältnissen, leidet unter Depressionen und hat so gut wie keine echten Freunde. Bis auf Isaac, den er nur über's Internet kennt. Als er ihn jedoch im echten Leben treffen möchte, trifft er auf den anderen Will Grayson und Tiny.Zu Beginn des Buches werden die Leben der beiden Jungen beschrieben. Während beide recht trist und eintönig erscheinen, ist die Sprache dies jedoch absolut nicht. Das Autorenduo wechselt sich pro Kapitel wie es scheint ab, während die Sprache des Chicago-Will auf sehr hohem Niveau mit vielen Fremdwörtern daherkommt und auch viele Wortspiele zu finden sind (meiner Meinung nach typisch John Green!), fällt direkt auf, dass der andere Will keine Großbuchstaben verwendet. Außerdem wird wörtliche Rede bei ihm grundsätzlich in Chat-Form wiedergegeben. Dies passt recht gut, da er es vermeidet, viel zu reden. Selbst mit seiner Mutter wechselt er nur Halbsätze, wenn dies absolut nötig ist.Der Kontrast zwischen den beiden Jungen wird durch die Sprache deutlich herausgehoben. Dass der aufbrausende Tiny das Bindeglied der beiden ist, wird schnell klar und gefällt mir sehr gut. Beide Leben werden durch diesen großen Jungen auf den Kopf gestellt. Und während Tiny ein Musical plant um die Welt der Schwulen zu beleuchten, bekommt er gar nicht mit, wie seine beiden Wills langsam zerfallen.Die wichtigen Charaktere dieses Buches (Will, Will und Tiny) sind absolut präzise gezeichnet. So viele Facetten werden aufgezeigt, dass man nicht umhin kommt, sie zu mögen und stark mit ihnen zu fühlen. Randfiguren tauchen auf und haben im Fall von Tinys Freunden keine nennenswerten Funktionen oder Eigenschaften, aber das ist meiner Meinung nach völlig in Ordnung.Grade an solchen stellen merkt man, dass dieses Buch nicht lustig ist. Es hat durchaus traurige, wenn nicht erschütternde, Passagen, besonders der depressive Will hat mich zuweilen wirklich traurig gestimmt und ich hätte ihn gerne in den Arm genommen. Beide Autoren schaffen es also, Emotionen von Mitleid über Trauer bis Freude sehr deutlich zu transportieren. Daran ist zu erkennnen, welch großes Talent beide besitzen.Dieses Buch hat mich auf seinen 305 Seiten eine Bandbreite von Emotionen durchleben lassen, welche sonst in drei Filmen nicht transportiert wird.Das Ende stellt die Aufführung von Tinys Musical dar, welches mit Songtexten untermalt wird. Absolut lustig und einfallsreich sind diese Passagen, sodass ich mir das Lachen an einigen stellen nicht verkneifen konnte!FazitWer Gegenwartsliteratur mag, die sich selbst nicht immer all zu ernst nimmt, ist mit diesem Buch bestens bedient. Eine tolle Sprache, authentische Charaktere und ein fulminantes Ende versprechen großen Spaß! Von mir gibt es 5 von 5 Sternen und eine dringende Kaufempfehlung!

John Green schrieb die Kapitel aus der Sicht des einen Will Grayson, David Levithan die aus der Sicht des zweiten. Die Kapitel wechseln sich ab. Diese Aufmachung mochte ich.In erster Linie geht es um Vertrauen, Freundschaft und Liebe. Depression und Außenseiter-Sein gehören ebenfalls dazu.Dennoch ist in diesem Buch alles in eine eigene Art von Humor gepackt. Es liest sich einfach und ist spannend. Ich bin regelrecht durch die Seiten "geflogen".So manche Stelle fand ich gut durchdacht und so geschrieben, insbesondere die des an Depression leidenden Will Grayson (geschr. v. David Levithan). Seine Gedanken und die Art sich auszudrücken gefielen mir sehr, da sie mir bekannt vorkamen. (Von ihm habe ich weitere Gedanken vermisst und gerne noch mehr über seine Geschichte erfahren wollen. Aber allein davon sollte dieses Buch nicht handeln.)Wieder andere Stellen brachten mich zum Lachen und Schmunzeln. Doch andere Handlungen inkl. Schluss fand ich übertrieben kitschig. Selbst für ein Jugendbuch ist es zu kitschig.Deswegen 4 von 5 Sternen in meiner Bewertung - Dafür, dass solche Bücher nicht meine Lieblingsliteratur sind, hat es mir insgesamt gut gefallen.

... für Teenager (zu denen ich nicht mehr zähle) interessant, die kein Problem mit Gedankensprüngen haben. Mir war das Buch zu verwirrend. Die Trennung zwischen der Vorstellungswelt eines depressiven Jugendlichen und der Realität war mir nicht klar. Auch fand ich das Kreisen um die ewig selben Gedanken (Ich bin alleine. Mir fehlt mein Vater. Bin ich schwul? Trau ich mich das Mädchen anzusprechen?) wiederholend und deprimierend. 100 Seiten weniger hätten hier wohl Abhilfe geschaffen.
